Playstation 5 Reveal

After weeks of speculation, rumored leaks, and delays, Sony unveiled the PlayStation 5 today at its Future of Gaming event. The event showcased 26 games that will be available for the new console, many at launch. Back in April, we got a look at the new DualSense controller that the PS5 will use, but today we got our first look at the consoles themselves. That’s right. Multiple. The PS5 will have two variations at launch. A super sleek diskless model, which seems to be the initial design, and a version with a disk drive included. Sony also showed off some matching accessories including a controller charging dock, a wireless headset, a media remote, and an HD camera, likely intended to help gamers stream their gameplay. The biggest thing missing from today’s announcement was a price point. Sony and Microsoft seem to be playing chicken with the pricing details of their next gen consoles, each hoping to undercut their rival.

The Playstation 5 has some impressive specs that will easily carry the brand into the future, even if they were not very well showcased at today’s event. The PS5 will have:

CPU: 8x Zen 2 Core at 3.5Ghz

GPU: 10.28 TFLOPs, 36 CUs at 2.23Ghz

Memory/Interface: 16 GB GDDR6/256-bit

Memory Bandwidth: 448GB/s

Internal Storage: Custom 825GB SSD

Optical Drive:  4K UHD Blu-ray Drive

3D Audio

USB-A & USB-C ports

Here are the 26 games that were announced today:

Horizon 2: Forbidden West

The sequel to 2017’s Horizon: Zero Dawn. This game looks to follow Aloy again, against a new batch of enemies. 

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales (Holiday 2020)

The follow up to Insomniac's hit Spider-Man game from 2018, but this time players will play as Miles Morales, and not Peter Parker. The announcement trailer didn’t show any true gameplay, but we did get enough of a glimpse to tell that the game takes place around Christmas time, in a snow covered NYC.

Resident Evil 8: Village (2021)

Village looks to take place in a super creepy small town, with the same protagonist as RE7, Ethan Winters. Also returning from 7 is the first person perspective and a slower pace, full of jump scares and screams

Gran Turismo 7

Often an early title in every Playstations’ library, the Gran Turismo series has often been the high water mark of each system’s graphic capabilities. The 7th installment seems to continue that tradition. 

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

This will be the first original story featuring Ratchet and Clank since the PS3. The game will allow players to jump from planet to planet and experience a multitude of gameplay modes, many of which were shown in the reveal trailer. 

Demon’s Souls Remake

A “from the ground up” remake of the PS3’s Demon Souls from 2009.

Death Loop (Holiday 2020)

The newest game from the studio behind the recent Wolfenstein games and the Dishonored series, Death Loop is a first-person shooter that will also be available on PC, but console exclusive to the PS5

NBA 2K21 (Fall 2020)

NBA 2K21 was the only sports game confirmed for the PS5 at the event. The graphics for the PS5 version of the game were noticeably improved from the PS4 version. 

GTA V

While it is by no means a new game, GTA V continues to be a fan favorite, and heavily played. GTA V Online will be given to all PS5 owners for free at launch. Bonus: PS4 owners will get an additional $1 million in GTA game cash starting today.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure

Sony’s signature Sackboy, from Little Big Planet,  will have his own game on the PS5. It looks to be a co-op 3D platformer.

Hitman 3 (Jan 2021)

No gameplay footage was shown, but the latest Hitman installment continues the story of Agent 47 with a noticeable visual upgrade from previous titles. 

GhostWire: Tokyo

A very creepy action-adventure game from the studio responsible for the Evil Within series. 

Godfall 

An action RPG from the studio that developed the Borderland games.

Pragmata (2022)

A really cool looking new adventure from Capcom, where players will take on the role of an astronaut. Or at least that’s what the extremely vague trailer seems to imply. 

Astro’s Playroom

A cute and fun platformer that will come preloaded on the PS5, designed to showcase the DualSense controller’s new features. 

OddWorld: Soulstorm

A new game in the OddWorld series, the PS5 exclusive will continue Abe’s story.

Returnal

A third person shooter that seems to put the players in an Edge of Tomorrow situation, where they come back to life after being killed. And not in the traditional video game way. 

Destruction All Stars

A PvP destruction game, like a cartoony Twisted Metal.

Project Athia

A new and unique game from Square Enix, Project Athia strives to be as much of a work of art as it does a video game. The visuals are stunning, and aspects of the game have been used to show off the Unreal Engine 5. 

Stray (2021)

In Stray, you play as a cat who must navigate a futuristic world inhabited by robots to solve mysteries and find your way home. That’s correct, you did not misread any of that. 

Kena: Bridge of Spirits

The first game from indie developer Ember Lab, Kena is a story-driven action adventure. Something along the lines of a non-Nintendo Zelda

Goodbye Volcano High (2021)

GVH is an animated  “cinematic narrative”, or playable movie essentially.

Jett: The Far Shore Revealed (Holiday 2020)

Jett looks to be a very stylized space exploration game, something akin to No Man’s Sky but with an actual storyline. 

Solar Ash (2021)

Another stylized world explorer, but this one looks like a dreamscape (or nightmarescape in some cases.)

Little Devil Inside

Another stylized world explorer? Yes, but this one came from Kickstarter! Little Devil Inside focuses more on the ordinary people and their day to day lives more than getting from point a to b as quickly as possible. 

Bugsnax (Holiday 2020)

This one offers no insight into the gameplay, but does feature fruit with eyes that can move and emote. Which is then eaten by a talking Australian walrus? This looks like a fun, albeit weird one, but what would you expect from the developers of Octodad. A game where you play as an octopus disguised as a man performing everyday activities to try and avoid suspicion and being exposed by a Japanese chef who wants to cook you. 

Oh, and Yes, the PS5 will be backwards compatible with most PS4 games!
